Secret and Not-So Secret Societies

The Wardens of the Black Gate

This society is a loose organisation of ethical necromancers and their allies. Their primary purpose is to deal with necromancers who abuse their powers - and with the consequences.

The definition of "abuse" often depends on the circumstances of the act. However any long-term violation of the separation of the living and the dead is almost always held to be an abuse. Assisting undead is usually also held to be wrong.

The association of necromancers and the undead is largely a myth. A significant minority can create zombies. While creating a zombie involves killing the victim it is not an offence against the Powers of Death, and so it is not always unacceptable. Some societies sentence serious offenders to be made into zombies, for instance. The necromancer, in such a case, is no more guilty of an offence than an executioner is guilty of murder.

Of the other undead, only White Walkers are accepted by the Wardens.

The Wardens have good relations with the Order of the Silver Nail (see Spherewalker) and the worshippers of some death-related deities, such as Odin. The followers of other deities - such as Anubis - dislike all necromancy, and so have a much more ambivalent relationship with the Wardens.
